Gagnef Municipality, Rural municipality in Dalarna County, Sweden
Gagnef Municipality is a rural area in Dalarna County that stretches across forests and waterways in central Sweden. The region is divided into several small localities, with Djurås serving as the main administrative hub.
The current municipality was formed in 1971 when two separate administrative areas merged into one. This combination created the structure that exists in the region today.
The area maintains a strong connection to forestry and wood production, which remains visible in the local economy and everyday life. You will notice small workshops and factories scattered throughout the landscape that reflect this long-standing tradition.
You can visit several scattered villages including Björbo, Bäsna, and Floda to get a sense of daily life across the municipality. Spring through autumn are the best times to explore, as the region becomes more accessible and outdoor activities are more comfortable.
The area sits where two major rivers, Västerdal and Österdal, meet and flow together as the Dal River, a feature that appears on the municipal coat of arms. This geographic meeting point has shaped the region's identity and development throughout its history.
